International Students Jasper Place High School is a multicultural environment that offers a welcoming atmosphere to students from around the world. International students who wish to attend our school and study in an English speaking environment are offered a wide variety of program choices. There are currently many international students enrolled from a variety of countries. Following their high school studies, many of these students choose to continue their education at universities in North America. Others are enrolled at JP to experience a Canadian learning environment and to become proficient in English. International students receive support while being integrated into mainstream programming so they can experience the highest levels of education that our high school can offer. English Language Learning Jasper Place offers English Language Learning courses for students whose primary languages are not English. While ELL students have much in common with other students, they often have additional needs that come with learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. The ELL program enables students to become effective communicators in the English language through the study of English speaking, reading, writing, listening, and viewing. Students work on specific areas of individual need to build skills necessary for high school graduation requirements. A variety of teaching methods, strategies, and resources are used throughout the ELL learning experience to improve these skills. All new ELL students are required to complete an English Language Learner assessment prior to enrolment at Jasper Place High School. Parents or their sponsors should arrange to have the assessment completed at the following location: English Language Support Services Centre (ELSSC) John A. McDougall School 10930-107 Street, Downstairs, Edmonton, Alberta T5H2Z4 Telephone: (780) 441-2200 ELL 1 • 5 credits Recommend ELL Assessment This course is designed for students who have little or no experience with functional/formal/written first language.
