Jasper Place High School - Guidelines for Involvement In Athletics

All student athletes at Jasper Place High School must acknowledge that it is a privilege, not a right, to represent their school.  Participation in school sports brings with it the following responsibilities:
  • -a serious commitment to the team and its members, including attendance at all practices, games, or related team functions
  • -a positive attitude and a willingness to cooperate with all coaching and teaching staff, students, opponents, officials, team-mates and classmates
  • -a high standard of self control and discipline in academics and athletics
  • -regular and punctual attendance for the entire year
Student athletes understand that by fulfilling the above commitments they will be upholding the good name and traditions of the school, and will be enhancing their opportunities to be successful in academics, athletics, and as citizens of Jasper Place High School.

Failure to comply with any of the aforementioned requirements may result in temporary or permanent dismissal from a team.

Rebel Athletics: Athletic tradition is strong at Jasper Place. Our interscholastic teams compete against other city public schools in league play and have a chance to challenge other city, provincial, and national schools in tournaments. We offer a wide range of sports to encourage as many students as possible to participate on a school team. Team members exhibit a high standard of excellence in academics, commitment to the team, and school activities. Any J.P. student is encouraged to try out for one or more of the following teams:

Badminton

Basketball

Cheer/Pom

Cross Country Running

Curling

Football

Golf

Handball

Indoor Soccer

Journal Games

Rugby

Soccer

Swim Team

Track & Field

Volleyball

Water Polo

Wrestling

Junior teams are open to any grade 9, 10 or 11 student. Senior teams are open to any student in any grade. Students are allowed 3 years of competition from initial Grade 10 registration.

Elite Athletes: Jasper Place High School offers extra assistance for elite student-athletes who are provincial, national or international calibre in their chosen sport. Accommodations are provided by modifying a student's timetable or assignment schedule to avoid confl ict with their training or competition timelines.

We also provide training assistance and design programs on an individual basis for pre-season, competitive or post-season cycles of training. Care and prevention of athletic injuries and rehabilitative programs are assessed through the our Fitness Centre and from our athletic therapist. Nutritional

concerns are also addressed, and individual programs are designed in consultation with experts in the fi tness and nutritional fi elds. Many of our elite athletes also choose to take our highly rated Athletic Medicine and Kinesiology and Sports Performance programs, which provide them with the academic knowledge to improve their sport performance. Our elite athlete coordinator assists our students in scholarship contacts, promotion, training schedules and recommendations, and coach communication. Many of our elite athletes have received full scholarships at universities and colleges in North America.

The REB Basketball Tournament: The first REB Basketball Tournament was held in 1982, with sixteen teams competing. The majority of the teams were from Edmonton with the balance from northern Alberta and the N.W.T. (Yellowknife, Dawson Creek, Spirit River and Grande Prairie). Over the last twenty six years the calibre of participating teams at REB has improved to include many provincial and state champions. American teams book over a year in advance in order to have the opportunity to participate in the REB Invitational Tournament. REB is now a 40 team tournament, with both junior and senior divisions in competition. Teams travel from across North America, China, and Austrailia to compete at Jasper Place High School in one of Canada’s top international basketball tournaments, known simply as the REB Invitational.

Noon-Hour Athletics: During the year, students will be offered an opportunity to participate in athletics during the noon hour. The prime focus is to provide a challenging environment for athletes to participate in a structured format without the intensity of interschool competition.Students are encouraged to form their own

teams and compete with their friends in a multitude of activities. Sign-ups for teams or individuals are advertised during the year. Sports include soccer, volleyball, 3 on 3 basketball, ball hockey, indoor soccer, badminton, and dodgeball. Students have a choice of playing elite or challenge divisions with co-ed teams.
