Science is a very important part of a student's basic education, since modern technological advances are based on the principles of science. The science courses offered at Jasper Place High School allow students to enhance their knowledge of science and technology to prepare them for future employment or entrance into university, technical institutes or junior colleges. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses, through increased content and higher level learning skills, provide advanced preparation for university level science courses. Excellent attendance is necessary for maximum success in all science courses. Classroom work not only delivers content, but also develops the learning skills necessary to master the understanding of the course. Laboratory exercises translate content into practical applications and allow the development of motor skills using specific scientific equipment. If misused the science laboratory can be a dangerous area. All students will be given basic instructions on laboratory safety. Specific safety precautions will be studied before each laboratory exercise. Any deviations from safety procedures will not be tolerated. Evaluation of students will be determined by practical exercises, assignments, quizzes, lab reports, lab tests, unit exams, and final exams. Upon enrolling in a science course, every student will receive a course outline which will specify the topics to be studied, the time involved, and the weighting assigned. All students in a particular subject will be evaluated using common criteria.
