Japanese 10 • 5 credits

This is an introductory course for those students with no previous experience in Japanese. This course will give the learner skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening. Students will learn the hiragana set of 46 characters as well as 30 Kanji characters. The learner will also be exposed to various cultural and thematic components specified for the 10 level such as self, schools, people around me, food, daily activities. Some animated films are studied in this course.

Japanese 20 • 5 credits

Successful completion of Japanese 10

Japanese 20 is an extension of Japanese 10 and is designed for students to develop their language skills in the six strands of communication: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. Students will learn the katakana set of 46 characters as well as 50 Kanji characters. The learner will be exposed to various cultural components specified for the 20 level such as home and community, weather, school life, fashion and shopping, travel. Some animated films are studied in this course.

Japanese 30 • 5 credits

Successful completion of Japanese 20

Japanese 30 is an extension of Japanese 20 and is designed for students to develop their language skills in the six strands of communication: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. Students at this level are expected to be able to read and write hiragana, katakana and 100 Kanji characters. The learner will be exposed to various cultural components specified for the 30 level such as holidays, celebrations and traditions, entertainment, communications, world of work, arts and literature. Some animated films are studied in this course.
